  1. Thanks for the nice review ! I am a 75 year old grandpa who lives near Buffalo NY and would be making this trip alone from Chicago on the Zephyr in early October hoping to see some great sights and colorful foliage . I am thinking of disembarking in Sacramento spending an overnight there and then catching the Zephyr back to Chicago . My health is pretty good .
I have not taken a long trip by train although many years ago I took the auto-train to Florida when my family was young .
Any thoughts or suggestions for Gramps ? Good idea not a good idea . I have watched a number of videos on You-tube created by different travelers of this route . Of course I am concerned that they are only presenting ‘ The Good ‘ !
    Thanks in advance !

    1. Hi James, I think it’s a great idea! I felt like it was a really fun once in a lifetime experience. I mentioned in my review the few things I wasn’t crazy about: hot in my room, hard to sleep, being forced to dine with strangers every single time 😀

But I think the good parts out weigh those point. Just getting the chance to see that scenery that you can really only see from the train is very special. Food was good. Roomette was comfortable.

Have a wonderful time and let me know how it was, and if you have any points I should add to the post! 🙂

  2. Very helpful review! We’ll be taking this train next week from Denver to California in a bedroom. Will let you know how it goes!

  4. Hello,
Thanks for providing your review. I am a newly retired teacher who finally can travel without the restrictions of teaching 11 months of the year. I have never traveled on Amtrak at all, and this trip seems like it would be great. I am curious, though, when you say that you could not get off the train except for select stops. There are a few places I’d like to get off and explore for a couple of days: Denver, SLC, possibly even Reno. Can one not get off in spots on the route and then get back on and head west again?

    1. Hi Mike, congratulations on your retirement! Most of the stops are only 5 minutes long; a couple were a bit longer, like 20 minutes. There is not enough time to leave the train station to see anything.

You can book multiple separate tickets for the Zephyr in order to get off at stops and then board the next train on another day. Amtrak also has a USA Rail Pass you can buy to make multiple stops, but it looks like you can only use that if you’re sitting in Coach.

Thank you! I am flying from Minneapolis to Chicago and hopping on the California Zypher on Wednesday! Loved your tips and ordered a fan and ear plugs! Thanks for the great info!

  6. Love your review. So helpful. Traveling soon. Will post how it went to you after.

    Thank you!

  7. Great review! I just read another Pin about 37 train rides in US., which stated that the Cal Zephyr does not have WiFi.

    1. Thank you! It’s true that the train itself does not have WiFi, but you can catch it on and off as you travel. I would not try to stream a movie, but overall I didn’t have trouble texting or using the internet.

Thanks for the great review. I just finished a fantastic trip on the CZ from Emeryville to Chicago.
Your description of the roomette experience mirrored mine, and prepared me for the minor inconveniences which were easily resolved.
Your suggestions for items to bring were on point. I’m going to follow your blog for future adventures.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to leave a comment! You made my day knowing I was able to help out!

I just completed a trip on the CZ from Emeryville to Chicago. It was a fantastic experience! Your review was extremely helpful and accurate. I too was a single traveler in a roomette, and every suggestion you made to prep for the trip was on point.
Thanks for taking the time to publish this guide.

  10. I love your review! My husband and I only rode the Zephyr from Denver to Glenwood Springs, so we didn’t get a chance to experience the sleeper portion. Good that you noted that dining is only included with sleeper accommodations. There is a small cafe available.

  11. Great description. Thank you. There is a lot of value in getting a real persons pov!

  12. Hi. Thanks for your commentary. I have taken the CZ from Chicago to Emeryville, stayed overnight at the hotel across the Emeryville track, and then gotten right back on the same train with the same crew and come home. I’ve done that 7 times. It’s a wonderful trip. Some of the irritations you speak of are resolved in other cars I think. The train attendant can do some things with the temperature. Again, thanks. I enjoyed the pictures and can’t wait to do the trip again next year. (It’s my traincation. I do it every year now.)

Being seated with other passengers in the dining car is a time-honored tradition. It’s a great way to meet other passengers. One has to accept this.

  14. Love your descriptive commentary. This trip is on “my list” also.
