United Polaris Business Class Review: Is It Worth the Splurge?

Ever stared at the Business Class booking screen wondering if it's really worth it? I did, for years. Then I booked United's Polaris Business Class from San Francisco to Rome and settled the question with my own money.

Here's the full experience, from the Polaris Lounge at SFO to the lie-flat bed somewhere over Greenland, with photos and the things I wish I'd known before boarding. A few rules have changed since I flew, including who gets into the lounge, so I've updated everything below.

United Polaris Lounge at SFO: First Impressions

First, the fine print, because it changed in April 2026. Getting into the Polaris Lounge is no longer as simple as “flying business class gets you in.” You now need a United Polaris ticket that isn't the cheapest “basic” Polaris fare, or a premium cabin seat on a short list of partner airlines like ANA, Lufthansa, Air New Zealand, or ITA. Book the bargain Polaris fare and you'll be pointed toward the regular United Club instead, where a day pass now runs $59. Check your fare class before you plan your afternoon around this place.

The lounge itself is huge, on two levels, with tons of nice seating, tables, and chairs.

Dining Experience: Buffet vs. Restaurant

Guests can dine from a buffet of sandwiches, soup, and salads, or in the full service restaurant. When we were there the wait for the restaurant was about half an hour. We were hungry, so we went to the buffet. The food was good, and the full bar is free.

Showers and Amenities

The SFO United Polaris Lounge has 8 showers available to guests. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and towels are provided, along with slippers, a loofah, deodorant, toothbrush and paste, and Q-tips. The shower rooms were clean and well maintained.

Quiet Rooms

Guests can also book a Quiet Room for a nap of up to one hour. It was indeed quiet in there. Rooms have a lie-flat lounger, slippers, pillow, sleep mask, earplugs, some Pellegrino sparkling water, and a Ghirardelli chocolate to help wake you up.

The Good

The SFO United Polaris Lounge was impressive. Spacious, with lots of seating options, and even a separate quiet area. The buffet spread was varied, fresh, and tasty.

The sit-down restaurant option was very cool, though I didn't get to try it since there was a half hour wait. With more time before my flight, I happily would have waited.

The showers and private nap rooms were wonderful. Life of luxury and leisure.

The staff was courteous and attentive.

Open bar. Need I say more.

The Bad

Honestly, I can't think of a bad thing about the lounge. Hmm…I had to use a coffee cup for my water because they were between rounds of clean water glasses. I survived.

The Flight

I flew from San Francisco to Rome on a 777. The flight was scheduled at almost 12 hours and came in closer to 11 and a half. I chose seat 3L and my friend Sophia chose seat 2L.

Polaris Business Class Seats: Are They Really That Comfortable?

Seat 2L had easy access to the aisle, while 3L had a very narrow entrance to the aisle. It would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues to navigate. However, in seat 3L it was easy to look out the window, while 2L was a bit far from the window.

On a flight from San Francisco to New York a few years ago, I was able to upgrade to a business class seat right before boarding for only a few hundred dollars. On that trip I got seat 1L, which was a great seat. Right next to the window AND easy aisle access.

In-Flight Dining: Better Than Expected

The flight started with a glass of champagne and a pass over the Golden Gate Bridge, then downtown San Francisco. Not a bad opening act.

Next came dinner. I chose “Roman Holiday” from the wide range of movie and TV offerings, which felt thematically appropriate, and settled in. I'd pre-ordered the beef short ribs entree. United emails you five days before the flight, and you can pick your entree in the United app or on united.com until 24 hours before departure.

Things started with warmed nuts and wine, or whatever beverage you wanted. Then a salad, mozzarella with tomato in balsamic, and a warm roll with butter.

Next came the short ribs, and I was pleasantly surprised: tender meat, flavorful mashed potatoes, and sides that didn't taste like they came from a microwave. Also, notice the salt and pepper shakers that look like little Star Wars Death Stars. I don't know who approved that, but I support it.

Finally, dessert. The options were a made-to-order ice cream sundae, a cinnamon crumb cake, or a cheese plate. Sophia and I both got the crumb cake, and Sophia was wise enough to ask for a drizzle of hot fudge on hers. All was very good.

Soon after that, most of the cabin settled in for the night. At the push of a button, the seat turns into a flat bed.

About an hour and a half before landing, the lights slowly came up and breakfast service started. I got the scrambled eggs and sausage. Not bad for an airplane.

What's Changing With United Polaris in 2026

Two updates since I flew, one on the ground and one in the air. The lounge access change is covered above. In the air, United is rolling out a new Polaris cabin on its newest 787-9s, with redesigned suites, sliding privacy doors, an even fancier “Polaris Studio” option up front, and a grab-and-go snack bar. Those planes start flying from San Francisco in 2026, to Singapore and London first. The 777-300s will be retrofitted eventually, but the 777-200s that fly the Rome route are keeping the current cabin. In other words, what you see in this review is what you'll get to Rome for a while yet.

Is United Polaris Worth the Price? Pros and Cons

Pros

• Good sized portions of food.
• The food was pretty good.
• Food presentation, with the little “tablecloth,” cloth napkin, and real flatware.
• Dessert offerings, especially the custom sundaes.
• Friendly and attentive flight attendants.
• TV was a good size for the space, with lots of movie and TV show options.
• Two pillows were provided: one small regular soft pillow and one memory foam pillow. It was great to have both, first behind your back while seated, then for a variety of head support while sleeping.
• The ability to lie flat.

Cons

• Lying flat wasn't as comfortable as I expected. The good news: United's upgraded Saks Fifth Avenue bedding now includes a mattress pad, and there's a cooling gel pillow available on request. Ask for both if they're not at your seat. It didn't occur to me at the time, and my back noticed.
• Seats closer to the aisle may have light from the galley or other passengers shining in your face.
• Seats closer to the window (except for the first row) had very narrow entrances. It was a little awkward getting in and out, and would be very difficult for someone with mobility issues.
• The cost. This is the main thing (of course) that keeps me from flying business class every time. Here are some annoying facts for you: if you paid $5,000 for a one-way 12-hour flight from San Francisco to Rome, that breaks out to $417 per hour, or $7 per minute. (One would typically book a round-trip flight, which makes it cheaper, especially if you do coach on the return, like I did.)

Final Verdict: Is United Polaris Business Class Worth It?

Flying United Polaris is a very cool experience. The SFO Lounge is practically perfect. I mean, what more could you want?

The flight was great too. Short of having a private, “Air Force One” style bedroom, the seat pods are about as comfortable and indulgent as it gets. And now that the bedding includes a mattress pad, my one real complaint about sleeping has been addressed. Just remember to check your fare class if the lounge is part of the appeal.
