Shashi Hotel Review: Mountain View’s Boutique Base for Solo Travelers New

I booked the Shashi Hotel in Mountain View for one night on a solo Silicon Valley trip, and I'd go back tomorrow. It's the rare hotel that makes a quick stopover feel like a proper getaway. Think urban oasis: sleek design, techie, and amenities that say “treat yo-self” without the side-eye. Here's the full rundown: the highlights, the lowlights, and the $50 upgrade I don't regret.

This review is part of my Mountain View Solo Travel Guide, where I cover Castro Street dining, Shoreline Park, the Google Visitor Center, and more.

Hotel Highlights

  • A heated outdoor pool, sauna, steam room, and yoga classes (yes, you can namaste your jet lag away).
  • Complimentary bikes for an easy ride to Shoreline Park.
  • On-site restaurant and bar, so you don't have to wander far for a nice glass of wine or a good meal. Also, a coffee and snack bar.
  • Walking distance to Shoreline Amphitheatre and the Google Visitor Center, if you're curious about snapping a selfie with an Android robot.

Hotel Lowlights

  • Only 4 chaise lounges by the pool, plus 2 “Cabanas” ($200 per 2 hours), and about 10 chairs. When I first came down I was soooo bummed to not be able to get a chaise lounge. (“Life of Leisure while covered up pool or ocean-side” is my cup of tea, big time) Happily I checked again in about 10 minutes and 3 of the chaise lounges had freed up!

  • In my despair over the lack of chaise lounges, I thought I could get an outdoor table in another fenced off section near the pool. So I went in to get a glass of wine and sit at one of those tables, but was told that I could only sit at the bar if I was on my own! Why I oughta!! I'd never encountered this before, but I'd read about solo travelers having that happen to them in Europe. (Hardly anyone else was in the restaurant!) So I got my wine to go, and happily.. see above.
  • No bathtubs.

The App Upgrade: $50 Well Spent

The Shashi Hotel has its own app and if you download and use it you save a few bucks. The app lets you check in yourself and choose your room once you're here and on its wifi. I took the bait and upgraded my self to a corner room with floor to ceiling windows for an extra $50. I was glad I did! My room was very cool! (BTW, I paid around $200 before the upgrade on a Saturday night. Prices will be higher for business days and concert days at Shoreline Amphitheater.)

Location: What's Within Reach

This is where the Shashi earns its keep for solo travelers. The Computer History Museum is right next door. The Google Visitor Center and Cafe is a 10 minute walk through redwood trees. Shoreline Amphitheatre is walkable for concert nights, and Shoreline Park is a flat 2 mile ride on one of the hotel's complimentary bikes. Downtown's Castro Street restaurants are 2 miles away. I cover all of these, including my Google Visitor Center BLT, in my Mountain View Solo Travel Guide.

Booking Tips

Be sure to book early especially if you're coming during summer concert season, the hotel fills fast when big names are playing at Shoreline. You can check rates and availability for the Shashi Hotel here. Remember to download the hotel's app before you arrive to save a few dollars and pick your own room.

The Verdict

Would I stay again? In a heartbeat. The chaise lounge situation needs work and the bar's solo-diner policy earned some side-eye from me, but the pool, the sauna and steam room, the free bikes, and that corner room view add up to a hotel that makes traveling on your own feel like the smart choice rather than the consolation prize. For 1 to 2 nights in Mountain View, this is my pick.
