Planning a trip to Rome and not sure where to stay for your first time visit? I get it. Rome is massive, full of history, and every neighborhood seems to offer something totally different. When I first visited, I was overwhelmed by choices: Should I stay near the Colosseum? Is the Pantheon area too touristy? Will I regret not being close to Termini Station?
After multiple trips and plenty of trial-and-error , I’ve found some of the best and safest places to stay in Rome. Each of these tested and loved personally by me, your ol’ pal Sue. Whether you’re craving a Pantheon view at breakfast, a charming apartment in a quiet alley, or a budget-friendly base near the train station, I’ve got a recommendation for you.
Let’s find the stay that fits your travel style and makes the Eternal City feel just a bit more personal.
Prices, of course, vary wildly depending on seasons and events. I have listed rates for the same time period (Aug. 2024) for comparison’s sake only.
Best Hotel Near the Pantheon in Rome: Hotel Albergo del Senato Review
Piazza della Rotonda, 73, Rome, Italy
This lovely hotel is as close to the Pantheon as you can get! Step out the front door and there it is, in all its huge, historic, stunning glory! This probably sounds lame but I kept thinking it looked like it was CGI’d into my view! So hard to wrap my mind around this magnificent, enormous, ancient building right in front of me as I ate my breakfast! 😃
The room itself was small (hey, it’s Rome), but the high ceilings made it feel airy and elegant. Decor? Classic Italian with a touch of “wow, I feel fancier than I am.” Despite being right on the busy Piazza, I slept like a baby thanks to the serious soundproofing. Rome magic or space-age windows? Not sure.

Charming VRBO Between Pantheon and Trevi Fountain: Raffaello Inn Rome Review
Via Di Santo Stefano del Cacco, Rome, Italy
This charming VRBO is only a 7 minute walk from the Pantheon and the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II , and about 10 minutes to the Trevi Fountain. On a 2 minute walk away you have a supermarket and a cafe!
The apartment is on the second floor (first floor to Italians). There is a small elevator right outside the door to the apartment, as well as a flight of stairs. The apartment features a kitchenette with cooktop, refrigerator, microwave, Nespresso and toaster. Also a washing machine!
I loved staying here because of the charm of the building and apartment, the courteous, responsive, and funny host, and the proximity to so many sights and conveniences. Also, I got to feel like a fairy tale princess when I looked out the window of the building!

Best Hotel Near Termini Station Rome: Hotel Ariston Review for Solo Travelers
Via Filippo Turati, 16, Rome, Italy
If you’re arriving by train or planning day trips outside the city, staying near Termini Station is incredibly convenient, and Hotel Ariston makes that convenience comfortable.
Just one block from the station, this hotel is a great choice if you want to be centrally located without sacrificing peace and cleanliness. The room I stayed in was modern, neat, and had a bit of understated elegance—not overly fancy, but just enough to feel like a nice step up from budget.
Breakfast was a pleasant surprise with solid options (because not every hotel buffet is created equal), and the staff were kind and helpful, especially when I needed directions or help with taxis.
It’s an ideal option if you’re in transit, have early departures, or simply want easy access to the entire city through Rome’s main hub.
Keep in mind that the area around Termini Station is not known as the safest area, but during the day I felt fine as a solo female. I wouldn’t wander around the area on my own much at night.

Spacious Rome Apartment Near Colosseum: Elder Statesman Monti District Review
If you’re traveling with family or a group and want space and location, this apartment in the Monti District is a fantastic find. We stayed here with six people and had more than enough room to spread out, and honestly, it felt like our own Roman home for a few days.
The apartment has three bedrooms, three bathrooms (yes, three!), a fold-out couch in the living room, and a small but functional kitchen. It was also blessedly air-conditioned, which made all the difference after full days exploring under the Roman sun. There’s even a washing machine, very handy when traveling with a group.
One of my favorite details? From the king bed in one of the rooms, you can see the Roman Forum out the window. Waking up to that view is something I won’t forget.
The Monti District itself is central but has its own distinct vibe, more local than touristy, with great restaurants, little boutiques, and a quieter feel in the evenings. It’s just a 10-minute walk to the Colosseum and Roman Forum, so you’re still in the heart of everything.
