Hotel Room Mate Pau Barcelona: Modern Boutique Hotel in a Walkable Location

I recently visited Barcelona for the first time. I knew Barcelona was an artistic city, and I wanted my hotel to match that energy without tipping into weird or uncomfortable.

Good news. Hotel Room Mate Pau totally did!

First Impressions: Small, Stylish, and Calm

Hotel Room Mate Pau is a boutique hotel that feels cool, but not flashy. The lobby is simple and efficient. Elevators are right there. Not super fancy, but you're not in Motel 6 by any means.

Head upstairs, though, and it opens up into a nice interior courtyard filled with little statues and sculptural busts, and an honor bar. What's not to like about an honot bar? The courtyard connects to a large common room / dining room where breakfast is served in the morning.

That honor bar became our go to pre dinner wine stop after our long tourist days and at the end of a long day of walking, the difference between “walk somewhere to get a drink” and “walk upstairs to get a drink” is meaningful.

The Cool Modern Room

The room design is fun and modern without being annoying or over the top. The standout detail is the backlit headboard with Swiss cheese style cutouts, which sounds odd on paper but looks genuinely cool in real life. Thankfully, it photographed well and felt even better in person.

And a personal victory worth celebrating…My room had a bathtub! After a week of showers only in Paris, getting a room with a bathtub nearly brought me to tears of joy. Yes, I am kind of a bath freak.

The bathroom was sleek, well lit, and thoughtfully laid out. Everything felt clean, functional, and intentional, which is exactly what I want after a long day of walking. And look at the size of this tub!

Location: Easy, Walkable, and Central

This is where Hotel Room Mate Pau really shines.

  • About a 5 to 10 minute walk to the metro
  • Close to a high end shopping area that is fun to stroll
  • Easy walking distance to major Barcelona sights:
    • Plaça de Catalunya – hub for metro lines, airport transport, shopping, and people watching.
    • Passeig de Gràcia (lower end) – Elegant boulevard with cafés, architecture, and designer shops.
    • La Rambla – Touristy, but still iconic and worth a stroll at least once.
    • Casa Batlló by Gaudi – One of the most unusual buildings in the city and an easy walk from the hotel.
    • Picasso Museum – A 15 minute walk through the charming Gothic Quarter on the way.

It felt central without being loud or feeling like a tourist trap, which matters a lot when you are traveling solo or just want good sleep at night. I never felt lost, uncomfortable, or far from where I wanted to be. The front desk clerks were all very helpful with restaurant recommendations, and there's a taxi stand right across the street.

Breakfast and Common Spaces

Breakfast is served in the common room off the courtyard, and it is a pleasant, relaxed space, not a frantic hotel buffet situation. Even if you do not book breakfast ($18), it is a nice spot to sit, plan your day, or decompress later with a glass of wine.

Who This Hotel Is Best For

Hotel Roommate Pau is a good fit if you want modern design without a pretentious door policy, a central location you can actually walk from, and a room that feels kind of artsy rather than assembled from a hotel parts catalog. If you are looking for a massive luxury resort or a place with a big spa and pool, this is not that hotel. But if you want charm, calm, and good taste, it's a great choice.

Would I Stay Here Again?

Yes. Without hesitation. And honestly, that bathtub alone earned it major points.
