Ever landed in a new place and realized your grocery run could make or break your vacation budget? If you’re visiting Northern California and looking for groceries for your trip (or even if you live here) you will probably have a nearby Safeway and a Walmart available to you.
Today I did a grocery run to a local Walmart SuperStore instead of my usual haunt, Safeway. I was curious to see how much the prices differed.
In this post, I’m sharing a Walmart vs. Safeway price comparison across 24 everyday grocery items. We’ll look at drinks, pantry staples, frozen meals, and even toilet paper to see which store gives you more bang for your buck, and where the savings just aren’t worth the trade-off.
If you’re planning a NorCal road trip, stocking up for a week in a cabin, or just tired of grocery sticker shock, this guide is here to help you save smartly.
Let’s dive into the data and some surprising results (spoiler: one store was nearly 40% cheaper overall!).
Drink Prices: Worth the Walmart Drive?
Drinks averaged 19% less at Walmart than Safeway. This is definitely worth a Walmart run for large quantities!

Frozen Meals: Major Savings at Walmart
Frozen foods averaged 28% less at Walmart than Safeway. OK, I’m becoming a Walmart shopper!

Deli Deals: Save 40% on Sandwich Staples
Only 2 items were compared in this category, but the average Walmart savings is 40% less than Safeway. Do not pass Go, head stright to Walmart for your sandwich supplies.

Pantry Staples: Surprisingly Close in Price
Kind of suprisingly the pantry items were only 5% cheaper at Walmart. Keep an eye on Safeway’s sales for items in this category.

Toilet Paper Wars: The 74% Surprise
Holy Cow! Based on only two items, Walmart was 74% cheaper than Safeway! What is up with the toilet paper price difference? Walmart must have gotten a great deal, or maybe Safeway is super greedy!

Produce Prices: Big Savings, But at What Cost?
Produce averaged a whopping 94% cheaper at Walmart! Despite this I will still tend to buy my produce at Safeway. Last time I grabbed strawberries from Walmart, they molded overnight. I’ve also ended up with very “suprise” bruised apples from Walmart. That’s why even with the 94% savings, I still pick Safeway for fruit.

So… Should You Shop at Walmart or Safeway in NorCal?
Category | Average Savings | Verdict |
---|---|---|
Drinks | 19% | Walmart for bulk buys |
Frozen Foods | 28% | Great Walmart option for travelers |
Deli | 40% | Always go Walmart |
Pantry | 5% | Watch Safeway sales |
Paper Goods | 74% | Walmart, hands down |
Produce | 94% | Walmart cheaper, but watch quality |
Wow! I was shocked with the comparison. Overall the items I’ve listed above cost $172.59 at Walmart vs. $242.05 at Safeway! That’s a $69.46 difference, or 40% less at Walmart!!
“Pantry items” may be cheaper at Safeway as long as you hit their sales at the right time. The biggest Walmart saving categories seem to be Produce and Paper Goods. But Walmart outprices Safeway significantly almost across the board!
I have a vaguely negative connotation associated with Walmart, but I am not sure if that’s from long ago or what. Is there an ethical issue with Walmart we should be aware of? How do they offer such cheap prices? Please let me know in the comments if you have any intel or links about this.

Update
A Facebook reader provided this link to me in response to my questions about Walmart’s ethics: Walmart engaged in illegal union busting at California store, U.S. agency says Basically, Walmart has been accused of poor treatment of employees, including not allowing unionization. I checked into it, and it looks like Safeway does have unionized employees, and this may be part of the reason for their higher costs, as well as their smaller size overall.
This is pretty handy in all aspects. Thanks for sharing
I would also be interested to know why Walmart is so much cheaper than Safeway? 40% less is a lot!
Great post! Even though Safeway is more expensive, I’ll be shopping there. I do not want to support a business, like Walmart, that mistreats their employees.
thank you so much I’m certain all your extra money spent elsewhere is going to make any difference at all LMFAO
This is very handy not only during trips but also for daily shopping. Thanks for sharing
